Run, Walk...Don't Rent from Dollar EVER!!!

Reserved car through Travelocity.com and purchased car rental insurance through Travelocity.com, too. At the Dollar counter, I was asked to sign the agreement for collision car insurance. I assumed that it is the same insurance booked through Travelocity. When I returned the car, I had intended to discuss the discrepancy with the agent, but the Dollar counter was closed. When I called to resolve the matter on 9/5/17, I was told by "corporate Dollar" does not manage Independent Dollar Owners and I needed to call Dollar in Salt Lake City, UT. At the time of rental I was asked, "I see you have collision insurance?," thinking that it's the car rental insurance through Travelocity, I signed the agreement. When back at my hotel, I noticed the discrepancy and planned to resolve it when I returned the car. I was told that I signed their contract for "their" insurance. I contend that Dollar failed to explain to me the difference. SLC Manager--independent Owner refused to grant my request for a credit $85.45. I think it a travesty that corporately Hertz allows Dollar to gouge customers. This was my first and my last time using Dollar.

I rented a car from DFW in March of 2017, I was not told at the counter that if I did not purchase the $12.99 a day toll tag thru them, that I would be charged the toll fee as well as an additional $15 each use fee. I did not purchase the toll thinking that I would just be billed for the toll only, this was not the case. I received a charge on my credit card for $107. I was not notified of the charges prior, they just showed up on my account. Then while I was in town, the rental car was involved in a hail storm that passed thru N. Texas. I returned the car at DFW, where there was no one there to inspect the vehicle. I had already called the day of the storm to notify them of what had happened, I was told that it will be in the system when I return the car. Upon the return, I had to deal with an unhappy employee who obviously didn't like her job, accused me of taking the car out of state based on the miles, only to find out it was because she wrote them down wrong. She was rude the entire process and NEVER brought up the claim for the hail damage. I left thinking I would at least hear back from someone else regarding the claim, this did not happen until 4 MONTHS LATER and I wasn't even notified by HERTZ, I received an email from my insurance company saying a claim had been paid. Apparently, it seems that it is HERTZ's policy to not communicate with their customers as well as their practice to hire employees who do no communicate as well. This is by far the worst ever experience I have had renting a car and I have been doing so for 20 years. Needless to say, I will never use Hertz or any of it affiliated companies due to their lack of customer service and the need to rip off their customers.

The toll procedure is normal. Name 1 rental car company that doesn't charge processing fees.

If you've been renting for 20 years, you should know.

And you should know that if there's any damage, an incident report should be filled out at time of return. If you don't get the right service from the check-in agent, you need to go inside and speak to the counter/supervisor. Be you should know this since you've been renting for 20 years.

You knew the damage claim was forthcoming.

It should not have surprised you. You are 50% at fault for the "surprise".

How it is you are claiming $4,000, if your insurance paid the claim?

You have no case with both the toll and the damage issues.

I've never been charged an outrageous amount for tolls. Other agencies bill you for the toll at the higher rate, not at the higher rate plus admin fee.

The point of the complaint was the horrible customer service. I notified the agency immediately after the damage but nothing was done or said until 4 months later, again poor customer service on their part.

Scam at Dollar Car Rental Phoenix Airport

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

I rented a car from the Dollar Car Rental location at the Phoenix Airport as per reference #58848**** from December 17, 2016 to December 31, 2017. At the pick up on December 17th, the agent at the rental sales counter was initially friendly but when it came to the Loss and Damage insurance she misrepresented my instructions.

She twice asked if I wanted this additional Loss and Damage coverage and I declined both times. I was surprised by her second request after I emphatically told her the first time that I do have sufficient private insurance, I have never accepted this type of coverage in my life and I also never had an accident or a claim. When I asked about putting my wife Carol on the agreement, she advised there would an extra charge of approximately $182. This seemed very high so I asked if there was an AAA or similar discount.

She immediately said yes to the AAA discount but this information was never volunteered by this sales agent. It seemed to me at the time, she was only interested in making my policy as high as possible. We produced our AAA cards and she then stated it “needed” to be added to the policy and would be subtracted when we returned the car, but she gave no valid explanation for the two step process. Then to my surprise she again asked if we wanted the additional Loss and Damage insurance coverage and I declined emphatically for the third time.

She again seemed very unhappy that we were not purchasing it. Perhaps she is on a company sponsored incentive program to increase the rates to customers?? At the sign off of the policy, I was getting tired of the process having being up since 530 AM in Vancouver, a 3 ½ hour flight, then at the counter for over 15 minutes for a process that should be less than 5 minutes. The amount that appeared on the screen of $706.16 seemed high and she said it was the rental fee, local and airport taxes so I signed it off.

What I did not realize at the time, was that I had prepaid for the rental base fee of $328.80 which did appear on my Visa statement with the transaction date of December 17, 2016. So the fee that appeared on the Dollar system of $706.16 was really just the Loss and Damage insurance of $398.86 which I declined three times plus taxes and other airport charges of $307.30. Therefore the sales agent did misrepresent the policy when she stated it was the rental fee, local and airport taxes. At the pick-up of the car downstairs, there were several choices but most had body bumps and scratches and we finally found a car and packed our things away.

At the exit gate, the agent had trouble with the computer and our car rental number. After another 5 minutes she explained the problem was that we had selected a car that was actually a “recall” and we had to go back and select another car and she graciously offered an upgrade at no additional cost. The amount on the new receipt to us was now at the value of $946.50 and she explained that the amount for the upgrade would be removed when we returned the car. Another two-step process without a valid explanation.

When I looked at the receipt closely later it was the $182 for my wife’s insurance and not the upgrade fee. Another misrepresentation!! And why is a ‘recall’ car on the lot offered to customers?? When we returned the car on the morning of December 31st, I waited for the attendant to finish with another customer and with the original receipts from December 17th in my hand I then noticed for the first time, that the agent from December 17th had added the Loss and Damage insurance to my policy.

So I asked the attendant who had just arrived to not process my payment as I wanted to speak to the agent at the counter. He checked the car over and handed me my Visa receipt. I asked him why he had not followed my instructions not to process the Visa card. He just shrugged his shoulders and said “Not my problem” and walked away.

I went upstairs to the sales counter and met the manager Devon and told him my story. He really couldn’t care less about all the issues I have stated and said I had to take it up with the claims department. Also, he was not concerned about the actions and comments with the receiving attendant being rude. I rent cars from a variety of companies about 20 times per year and this is the worst I have ever been treated by any company from the beginning to end of the rental process.

People at this dealership are being deceitful to the customers with a goal to just make money for themselves and/or Dollar Car Rental. The value of good and friendly customer service is totally lost at this location. Employees represent the values of their manager which I did find out for myself that he has an exceptional disappointing attitude toward customer service.

There is clear evidence that the Dollar Car Rental location has misrepresented the intent of the rental policy to myself and other customers. What started out to be a car rental of $328.80 plus taxes and airport charges has turned out to be a total of $328.80 + $706.16 = $1,034.96.

... I got dooped by these crooks as well.... $400 in additional charges, including over $100 for $11 of toll charges. The men at the counter did not explain it, and it is impossible for tourists to know Florida's toll system. I have put forward 2 complaints, never got a response, and in the meantime they conveniently debited my account with the disputed charges .. On top of that, $300 charge because of a bit of smoke smell in the car (note that this is not on the rental contract). Was mistreated , conveniently misled , and treated with the utmost disrespect, upon my complaining at the car return ( they know customer cannot waste time as they have flights to catch) Please stop these crooks from dooping other customers... This is close to a criminal legalized organization

Will not honor AARP Senior discount; poor service,

Booked car on line but dollar service rep said they don't honor the insurance I took out on car because it is not their insurance; refused to honor AARP Senior discount; reserved car a month in advance, no car ready , waiting over an hour and would not provide upgrade free of charge, as most company's will; will never ever use Dollar Car Rental again. Have been very pleased with enterpize in the past, hertz, budget. Let's see how they try to scam me when I return the car

I suspect that the real story is that the rental car company places the renter in primary position for any damage to the car, regardless of fault. This means the renter must cut the check first, then mitigate with their insurance company.

As far as the free upgrade, it depends on how tight their inventory is.

If you had to wait over an hour, then inventory is absolutely too tight. These upgrades are not guaranteed.

The reason there are waits is the competitive pricing since the Internet has made it necessary to overbook.

They have to report to shareholders. The companies that have small or no lines during peak periods have higher prices.

Sorry, but there was no scam.

Deceived Customer at Dollar Rental Car: Tampa, FL Airport TPA

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

To whom it may concern: I’m writing to you about my experience at the Dollar Rental Car location at Tampa Airport on 3/21/2017 at 11:00PM. Prior making a reservation with your company, my son informed me to book a Car Rental with Dollar as he frequently travels and found your service to prove Excellent of Enterprise and Hertz.

My son made a reservation through the Dollar website and received confirmation that a rental would be available on 3/21/2017 at 11:00pm. I, myself typical book my reservations through Enterprise and Alamo when traveling on business and never even heard of Dollar Rental prior to receiving my rental. The reason for my travel is for my daughter being in the ICU at a local hospital due to serious health concern and now she’s passed away . Here’s the situation that took place at the Dollar location inside the Tampa Airport, in detail: My Southwest flight landed, bag pick-up was around 10:20PM and I headed to the Dollar counter.

I waited for 20 minutes prior to being greeted, when it was my turn your agent informed me they didn’t have any rental cars available. I explained to the agent that I have a reservation and showed the print out. Your agent informed me to wait about 10 minutes and one would become available. 30 minutes went by and you agent came back informing me about no rental again being available.

At this point there was a line of customers behind me which started to get out of the line and I witnessed them going to the other Rental Car kiosks of your competitors. More time went by and finally your agent explained to be me that Dollar didn’t have any rentals available and then grabbed a rental from Hertz. Your agent informed me to reach out to your Rental Manager Heather and provide this information to her. I was informed to contact a Manager by the name of Heather.

I have attempted several times to reach her at the Dollar Rental Car at Tampa Airport. I have still yet to receive a phone call back. As a Doctor, I have many patients that ask for recommendations for shoes brands I wear to automobiles I drive. In this situation of the rental car not being available and my frustration, I can definite someone not to use Dollar Rental Car Company.

On 3/26/2017, I contacted 866-43*-226 spoke to a woman, informed her to extended rental to April 4, 2017 and she told me there is a $10 rental contact change fee associated. I explained to her that when I originally picked up the rental from Dollar Rental Car at Tampa TPA Airport that I asked the Representative at the counter if a fee would be associated due to changing rental since this was a medical emergency since my daughter was in the ICU at the local hospital. The Representative informed there shouldn’t be anything to worry about. Yesterday 3/28/2017, I called the 866# spoke to a women, informed her I needed to drop the rental at the Fort Myers, FL - Southwest Airport RSW due to a flight change pertaining to a family health situation.

I confirmed with this woman a change fee wouldn't apply and she would authorize the rental drop to this location with no additional charges owed. Today, I called the 866# spoke to a man, I wanted confirm that I was scheduling my flight through Fort Myers, FL - Southwest Airport RSW and that airport will be accepting rental due to being picked up from the Tampa TPA Airport. I was told yes, you're authorized to drop rental and there will be a $10 rental contact change fee and there would be a different rate for the rental since Fort Myers, FL: Southwest Airport costs more. This man informed me an additional cost and would total $482 and change which included two rental agreement change fees.

It sure the *** seems like Dollar Rental Car Company is in the business to deceive its customers. My concern is that Dollar Rental Company didn’t explain anything of these additional changes to me when I asked the Representative specifically about possible changes and now I’m getting charged on the back end. It’s such a shame this is happened.

In closing, I’m seeking some form of compensation for the lack of your Company’s service and now deceiving me. I should have never acquired a rental from Dollar Rental Car and paid more to go with a more reputable company like Enterprise.

I paid through the Internet in Australia for a car rental in Orlando. Then Dollar rent-a-car charged me again for the same car after returning the car. I have tried several times to contact Dollar rent a car via their complaints website, and no response. It appears that after you fill out the complaint form, submit it and it goes nowhere, no answer. The end result is that I'm still out of pocket several hundred dollars. It would be good that if this forum could assist me to get my money back it would be appreciated. Deceptive charges.

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
Charged twice for initial reservation and new reservation after verifying we are only being charge with new the reservation. No transparency. When we picked up rental car with Dollar at the Kahului, HI airport we requested an upgrade and asked how much it will be. We were told that we would be given a discount if we wanted an upgrade that was not much higher than our initial reservation. We agreed to the upgrade knowing that the initial reservation was canceled. When we returned the car on 3/30/2017 we were given a receipt of $150.64. After we checked out credit charges, CARHIRE charged us $139.62 and we had no idea who this entity was. Internet searched showed that Dollar and Hertz were the same company so I called Hertz. Danny, was the customer service rep. who verified that the charges were correct but the desk sales person should have clarified it was an "additional" to the initial charge; but he would be happy to discount half the charges. I declined due to the transparency were lacking and that we would like to receive full refund. I wrote to the Better Business Bureau and Consumer Affairs regarding this incident. I would also write to the State Attorney General for Hawaii where this happened and Oklahoma where Dollar is headquartered.

Theft by deception

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
We rented a car in the ATL airport and the first was the undisclosed $350 deposit that had to be taken before we could rent the car. Keep in mind that if your name isn't on the driver list then your card can not be used. My wife made the reservations and we kept all our funds for the trip on her card but she needed me to do the driving. They refused to use her card. So it took me over an hour to find another way that worked under my name after many money transfers and charges of 25 bucks per transaction. so an extra 50 there. Then the guy at the counter force sells me this gas coverage telling me that by paying up front my gas price is lower than if I filled it myself before drop off. I got a 52 dollar charge after dropping the car off listed as "Gas" so at the 2 dollar a gallon he claimed I was getting what is that like 25 gallons of gas??! In a 2017 Toyota 4 banger with a 10 gallon tank? That by the way I filled up before I dropped it off anyway just because? What did you do Fill up your personal car? This Place ripped me and my family off and is NOT honest. Stay clear of these people, they Lie and steal. We will never use them again no matter what. It felt like I was dealing with terrorists.

Dollar/Thrifty/Hertz Rent-a-Car are criminals

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
We were scammed by Dollar Rent-a-Car in Tampa FL in March of 2017. We paid $155 down on a compact car rental. We only owed $105 more upon arrival flying into Tampa from Pennsylvania. The girl at the Dollar/Thrifty/Hertz desk at Tampa offered us every possible up charge under the sun which we declined. I told her we had damage protection thru our car insurance policy and declined the damage protection. She illegally added the $29.49 per day to our credit card bill without our knowledge. We didn't know Dollar Rent-a-Car defrauded us until a month later when the credit card bill came and we were overcharged by $235.92. Dollar refused to give us a refund. We contacted BBB, this is a known scam. We got no cooperation from Dollar. When you sign electronically you have signed a bunch of fine print and they have girls adding charges, getting paid commissions, and they have your signature because you have to use a credit card. We had $235.92 stolen from us by Dollar/Thrifty/Hertz and they refused to refund the money even when we confronted them.

Unfortunately, there are unscrupulous rental agents that make them all look bad. I wasn't there, so I can't take sides.

Signatures always take precedence over verbal. The managers weren't there, so they have to go with that.

All you can do is try to reverse the charges with your credit card company.

Also file a formal complaint, naming the actual agent, with their corporate office. If enough of that is done, and they see a trend with a particular agent, they should take action.

The problem with your situation is that the scam works both ways.

Dollar charged me for insurance I had declined.

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
I rented the car through Travelocity for six days (midsize) for a total of $168. Charged to my debit promptly. When I picked up the car I made it clear that I didn't want additional insurance since I have that benefit for full coverage on my license. I declined any and they said they'd have to put a $280 additional charge while I had the car and it would be reimbursed. The woman spoke with an accent so I had a bit of a hard time understanding everything, but made it clear that I didn't want extras. I signed where she told me and off I went. When I returned the car the guy at the intake garage printed off a piece of paper that read $243 charge (Atlanta airport). I was under the impression that they'd charge my card for the difference of the $168 I already paid and the $243 on the receipt. Nope, they charged the $243 two days later it showed up on my account. On the same receipt it showed everything I declined, but the really expensive insurance I supposedly accepted. When I called I was told that I had signed an agreement and there was nothing I could do. I asked to speak to a supervisor and of course was told that wasn't an option since they have a signed agreement. I asked for an email copy of said agreement and I couldn't really understand her very well either. Talked fast and low. It sounds like this is the standard operating procedure. Why would I rent a car for six days and pay a grand total of $411. My airfare was only $300!
