Scam at Dollar Car Rental Phoenix Airport
I rented a car from the Dollar Car Rental location at the Phoenix Airport as per reference #58848**** from December 17, 2016 to December 31, 2017. At the pick up on December 17th, the agent at the rental sales counter was initially friendly but when it came to the Loss and Damage insurance she misrepresented my instructions.
She twice asked if I wanted this additional Loss and Damage coverage and I declined both times. I was surprised by her second request after I emphatically told her the first time that I do have sufficient private insurance, I have never accepted this type of coverage in my life and I also never had an accident or a claim. When I asked about putting my wife Carol on the agreement, she advised there would an extra charge of approximately $182. This seemed very high so I asked if there was an AAA or similar discount.
She immediately said yes to the AAA discount but this information was never volunteered by this sales agent. It seemed to me at the time, she was only interested in making my policy as high as possible. We produced our AAA cards and she then stated it “needed” to be added to the policy and would be subtracted when we returned the car, but she gave no valid explanation for the two step process. Then to my surprise she again asked if we wanted the additional Loss and Damage insurance coverage and I declined emphatically for the third time.
She again seemed very unhappy that we were not purchasing it. Perhaps she is on a company sponsored incentive program to increase the rates to customers?? At the sign off of the policy, I was getting tired of the process having being up since 530 AM in Vancouver, a 3 ½ hour flight, then at the counter for over 15 minutes for a process that should be less than 5 minutes. The amount that appeared on the screen of $706.16 seemed high and she said it was the rental fee, local and airport taxes so I signed it off.
What I did not realize at the time, was that I had prepaid for the rental base fee of $328.80 which did appear on my Visa statement with the transaction date of December 17, 2016. So the fee that appeared on the Dollar system of $706.16 was really just the Loss and Damage insurance of $398.86 which I declined three times plus taxes and other airport charges of $307.30. Therefore the sales agent did misrepresent the policy when she stated it was the rental fee, local and airport taxes. At the pick-up of the car downstairs, there were several choices but most had body bumps and scratches and we finally found a car and packed our things away.
At the exit gate, the agent had trouble with the computer and our car rental number. After another 5 minutes she explained the problem was that we had selected a car that was actually a “recall” and we had to go back and select another car and she graciously offered an upgrade at no additional cost. The amount on the new receipt to us was now at the value of $946.50 and she explained that the amount for the upgrade would be removed when we returned the car. Another two-step process without a valid explanation.
When I looked at the receipt closely later it was the $182 for my wife’s insurance and not the upgrade fee. Another misrepresentation!! And why is a ‘recall’ car on the lot offered to customers?? When we returned the car on the morning of December 31st, I waited for the attendant to finish with another customer and with the original receipts from December 17th in my hand I then noticed for the first time, that the agent from December 17th had added the Loss and Damage insurance to my policy.
So I asked the attendant who had just arrived to not process my payment as I wanted to speak to the agent at the counter. He checked the car over and handed me my Visa receipt. I asked him why he had not followed my instructions not to process the Visa card. He just shrugged his shoulders and said “Not my problem” and walked away.
I went upstairs to the sales counter and met the manager Devon and told him my story. He really couldn’t care less about all the issues I have stated and said I had to take it up with the claims department. Also, he was not concerned about the actions and comments with the receiving attendant being rude. I rent cars from a variety of companies about 20 times per year and this is the worst I have ever been treated by any company from the beginning to end of the rental process.
People at this dealership are being deceitful to the customers with a goal to just make money for themselves and/or Dollar Car Rental. The value of good and friendly customer service is totally lost at this location. Employees represent the values of their manager which I did find out for myself that he has an exceptional disappointing attitude toward customer service.
There is clear evidence that the Dollar Car Rental location has misrepresented the intent of the rental policy to myself and other customers. What started out to be a car rental of $328.80 plus taxes and airport charges has turned out to be a total of $328.80 + $706.16 = $1,034.96.

Deceived Customer at Dollar Rental Car: Tampa, FL Airport TPA
To whom it may concern: I’m writing to you about my experience at the Dollar Rental Car location at Tampa Airport on 3/21/2017 at 11:00PM. Prior making a reservation with your company, my son informed me to book a Car Rental with Dollar as he frequently travels and found your service to prove Excellent of Enterprise and Hertz.
My son made a reservation through the Dollar website and received confirmation that a rental would be available on 3/21/2017 at 11:00pm. I, myself typical book my reservations through Enterprise and Alamo when traveling on business and never even heard of Dollar Rental prior to receiving my rental. The reason for my travel is for my daughter being in the ICU at a local hospital due to serious health concern and now she’s passed away . Here’s the situation that took place at the Dollar location inside the Tampa Airport, in detail: My Southwest flight landed, bag pick-up was around 10:20PM and I headed to the Dollar counter.
I waited for 20 minutes prior to being greeted, when it was my turn your agent informed me they didn’t have any rental cars available. I explained to the agent that I have a reservation and showed the print out. Your agent informed me to wait about 10 minutes and one would become available. 30 minutes went by and you agent came back informing me about no rental again being available.
At this point there was a line of customers behind me which started to get out of the line and I witnessed them going to the other Rental Car kiosks of your competitors. More time went by and finally your agent explained to be me that Dollar didn’t have any rentals available and then grabbed a rental from Hertz. Your agent informed me to reach out to your Rental Manager Heather and provide this information to her. I was informed to contact a Manager by the name of Heather.
I have attempted several times to reach her at the Dollar Rental Car at Tampa Airport. I have still yet to receive a phone call back. As a Doctor, I have many patients that ask for recommendations for shoes brands I wear to automobiles I drive. In this situation of the rental car not being available and my frustration, I can definite someone not to use Dollar Rental Car Company.
On 3/26/2017, I contacted 866-43*-226 spoke to a woman, informed her to extended rental to April 4, 2017 and she told me there is a $10 rental contact change fee associated. I explained to her that when I originally picked up the rental from Dollar Rental Car at Tampa TPA Airport that I asked the Representative at the counter if a fee would be associated due to changing rental since this was a medical emergency since my daughter was in the ICU at the local hospital. The Representative informed there shouldn’t be anything to worry about. Yesterday 3/28/2017, I called the 866# spoke to a women, informed her I needed to drop the rental at the Fort Myers, FL - Southwest Airport RSW due to a flight change pertaining to a family health situation.
I confirmed with this woman a change fee wouldn't apply and she would authorize the rental drop to this location with no additional charges owed. Today, I called the 866# spoke to a man, I wanted confirm that I was scheduling my flight through Fort Myers, FL - Southwest Airport RSW and that airport will be accepting rental due to being picked up from the Tampa TPA Airport. I was told yes, you're authorized to drop rental and there will be a $10 rental contact change fee and there would be a different rate for the rental since Fort Myers, FL: Southwest Airport costs more. This man informed me an additional cost and would total $482 and change which included two rental agreement change fees.
It sure the *** seems like Dollar Rental Car Company is in the business to deceive its customers. My concern is that Dollar Rental Company didn’t explain anything of these additional changes to me when I asked the Representative specifically about possible changes and now I’m getting charged on the back end. It’s such a shame this is happened.
In closing, I’m seeking some form of compensation for the lack of your Company’s service and now deceiving me. I should have never acquired a rental from Dollar Rental Car and paid more to go with a more reputable company like Enterprise.

The toll procedure is normal. Name 1 rental car company that doesn't charge processing fees.
If you've been renting for 20 years, you should know.
And you should know that if there's any damage, an incident report should be filled out at time of return. If you don't get the right service from the check-in agent, you need to go inside and speak to the counter/supervisor. Be you should know this since you've been renting for 20 years.
You knew the damage claim was forthcoming.
It should not have surprised you. You are 50% at fault for the "surprise".
How it is you are claiming $4,000, if your insurance paid the claim?
You have no case with both the toll and the damage issues.
I've never been charged an outrageous amount for tolls. Other agencies bill you for the toll at the higher rate, not at the higher rate plus admin fee.
The point of the complaint was the horrible customer service. I notified the agency immediately after the damage but nothing was done or said until 4 months later, again poor customer service on their part.
