Verified Reviewer | Buffalo, New YorkUnethical Billing Practice for Tolls
I recently rented a car from Dollar Car Rental at Buffalo Niagara International Airport and was hit with an undisclosed $139.95 fee from PlatePass after the rental period ended. Unfortunately, this experience has left me deeply disappointed with both companies, and I want to warn others about their unethical practices.
When my wife and I picked up the car, the EZ-Pass transponder was already open and active, and we were given no information at the rental desk about optional toll services like PlatePass. As tourists from a city without toll roads, we reasonably assumed the transponder was part of the service. At no point were we informed that using the transponder would automatically enroll us in a $139.95 PlatePass All-Inclusive package.
After returning home, Dollar and PlatePass attempted to charge my credit card, but the transaction was flagged as potential fraud. When I contacted them, they acknowledged that the fees were not clearly explained at pickup and offered only a partial fee reduction, still expecting me to pay administrative charges I never knowingly opted into.
The transponder was pre-activated when we got in the vehicle. We never had a chance to opt in or out. Even if the terms were buried in a lengthy rental contract, it is unreasonable to expect customers to comb through fine print for such critical information. It is clear that Dollar and PlatePass use this hidden-fee tactic to generate revenue at the expense of unsuspecting customers.
If you are planning to rent from Dollar or any company partnered with PlatePass, be extremely careful. Check the transponder before driving off and ask detailed questions about their toll policy.
I hope Dollar and PlatePass address this deceptive practice. But as it stands, I will not be using their services again and strongly recommend renters consider other options to avoid similar issues. To be clear, Dollar, Thrifty, and Hertz are all owned by the same company.
In 2011, a class action lawsuit was filed against Hertz, Dollar, Thrifty, and their partner PlatePass over allegations of undisclosed and misleading toll-related fees. Customers reported being charged excessive administrative fees without proper disclosure, and some were enrolled in toll programs without their knowledge or consent.
The legal proceedings culminated in settlements between 2014 and 2019. Hertz agreed to an $11 million settlement to address complaints that it had charged customers without sufficient notice about the PlatePass fees. Dollar and Thrifty faced similar legal challenges.
These cases highlight a pattern of complaints about the lack of transparency in toll-related programs offered by the Hertz Corporation. Be warned. Better yet, choose another rental company.

Verified Reviewer | Las Vegas, NevadaConcerns over recent rental
To Whom It May Concern:
In May 2024, my husband booked a rental through Dollar Car Rental, booking number B6809****. A Nissan Pathfinder, or a similar car, was to be picked up at the Las Vegas Airport on October 5, 2024, at 12 pm. I called the rental location on October 4, 2024, to inform the rental office that our flight would not land until 12:30 pm. I was told that this was not a problem and that the rental would actually be available up to 48 hours after the listed reservation.
Upon arriving at the Las Vegas airport, we followed the directions on the rental voucher to go to the shuttle which would take us to the car. After not being able to find the location for the shuttle, we asked security who looked at the directions and also confirmed that they were not giving the correct location for pick-up. They directed us to another door, on a different level and opposite side of the building, which is where we picked up the shuttle.
After arriving at the car rental pick-up location, we went to the desk where we were told that it could possibly be two hours before we would be able to pick up our car, even though it was an hour and a half after our scheduled pick-up time of 12 pm. There was not a clear explanation given for the delay. Myself, my husband, two children, and luggage made our way to the garage for our car. In the garage, we found people in two lines on either side of a small office structure, and there were no employees to give directions. We got in line, which extended past the small building and almost back into the rental facility, to wait for our vehicle. After approximately 30 minutes, another customer got in line behind us and said that there was actually one line for SUVs and one line for cars. We checked with an employee who was pulling cars up and they confirmed that statement and told us we were in the wrong line. At this point, there were only approximately four groups in front of us, but when we had to move lines, we were back almost to the building again. A simple sign could have solved this problem if an employee was not available. When asked about the delay, an employee told us that it was a problem with third-party websites overbooking them and not communicating with them. This is not the customer's problem. Throughout the process, there were also employees who came on the scene who gave conflicting information, such as changing which line was for SUVs and even letting customers further back in the line get vehicles before others.
Finally, at 2:56 p.m., when they could not give us an estimate as to when a 7-passenger vehicle, which we had paid for, would be available, if at all. We asked to see if we could fit our luggage in a smaller vehicle, a Nissan Rogue. When it was determined that our luggage would fit, we consented to take that vehicle due to the fact that we had been traveling all day and that our scheduled plans were already having to be altered for the evening.
I am sending this email first to inform you about the way in which customers are served and treated at this rental facility. I am also requesting that we be refunded the price difference between the vehicle (a 7-passenger) that we reserved and the one that we ended up receiving (a 5-passenger), along with compensation for the time, changes in activities that had to be made, and the stress of the experience.
I look forward to hearing back from you soon. If additional information is needed, please let me know.

Verified Reviewer | Oxnard, CaliforniaPrices and rsvp
I would like to thank both Henry and his staff. Since Dollar was a lowest price I tried with Dollar again, making sure that I rsvp through Dollars own site.
Called to confirm 5 hrs before hand.
It worked great. I look forward to making Dollar my go-to.
It was to be a sprint or similar size. I had it reserved with the complete breakdown of my confirmation number. And my priceline number as well once I got there. II was told that they did not have a sprint and that the only thing they had was a vehicle that was twice the amount.
Regardless of the fact that I had the reservation, he told me at the dollar's rental that they did not have that and the price line was incorrect when they offervehicles online for reservations. I was going to get a 3 day. Car rental for a $117 complete. I ended up with a 2 day car rental with a $200 deposit and a $156 for 2 days.
There was no assistance only that the gentleman kept saying. You can't count on that. You have to call directly to the airport rental office and go from there. I would appreciate some kind of assistance.
I don't understand this.

Verified ReviewerBEWARE of this FRAUDULENT company
Beware! Please save yourself money, time, and frustration and book a car from anyone other than Dollar.
If Dollar is your cheapest option, don't worry, you'll pay later. If you have a question or change of plans that require reservation edits where you need to speak with a human, good luck staying on hold for 30 minutes up to 2 hours. If you are lucky enough to reach a human (that you can't understand), they will jack up the price so much that you begin to believe that you've been redirected to scammers from an independent company in India where they get a cut of the price increase. My flight was cancelled, and I needed to change my pick-up/drop-off dates.
You can't make these kinds of changes on the website forcing you to call. I called the number on the website and double-checked it with Google. After being on hold for 45 minutes, the 'agent' told me that my original $450 reservation was now going to cost $1400. When I questioned the price, I was put on hold.
When the 'agent' returned, I was given a lower price of $1050. When I asked to speak to a manager, I was promptly disconnected. Not having time to wait on the phone again for half the day, I gave up and hoped my reservation had not been cancelled when I arrived at my destination. Upon arrival to pick up my car at the airport Dollar Rental counter, I was shocked, but relieved, to find that my reservation was still active and I was only charged $125 for changing my reservation.
So... who did I speak with on the phone via the number on the Dollar website who wanted to charge me over double for the same reservation? Though I was grateful that I ultimately received a Dollar car, I and others waited over an hour in line to get to the counter while watching every other car rental company sail through their lines leaving only Dollar with a standing line of over 30 people with children and luggage waiting an hour+.
Though the Dollar airport counter employees seemed to be trying, it was a hot mess behind the counter with employees struggling with their computer system, keys, crowd management, and frustrated customers. Please save yourself time, money, and frustration and rent a car from anywhere else!

Verified Reviewer | Oxnard, CaliforniaAgency said rsvp cars not in
This dollar car rental office left me with one option, pay twice as much and a large deposit. I had reserved a small sprint (simular) with priceline.
I had all the RSVP on my phone and confirmation. I rented for errands, no trips. The man who I first spoke with (mgr) who said they could not see anything and you have to rsvp 24 hrs in advance. This made no sense as I had shopped online for the best deal.
It was for 3 days at a total of $112. total, and he said nope. The best he had totaled $156. FOR 2 days and a deposit, I might get back on Wed.
I am so confused as I've never experienced this before.
He blames PRICELINE, and PRICELINE said what HE did is not correct. Why is Dollar renting at the very small airport. DO NOT use Dollar unless you are willing to go through them directly, as the mgr said. I am not sure why PRICELINE, EXPEDIA.
BOOKING.COM and more. I wanted a spark, ended up with a V8 gas guzzler. Very disappointing. Then I was told that my $200.
deposit would take two business days for refund. Since it was sent to the bank late yesterday, I am w/o funds till Wed or Thursday. I am so confused, and it completely changed our plans. I drove 50 miles pd $126 with my deposit in limbo and all this for two days.
I have never encountered such a rip-off with a car rental agency. So, he said PRICELINE does not know which cars they have. He said I needed to call him to get rentals. Please share with me anyDO NOT explanation because I was ripped offSince drop-off and nothing signed by me, I am questioning now if he will give me my $200.

Hello, I am trying to get my $200.00 deposit back from my rental from Providence, RI, and returned the vehicle to the same location. It was rented on September 11th, 2024, and returned on September 16th.
My Rental Record number is 37918****. I see no pending charge on my Credit Card when I check my account, so I am sure it has not been released.
Would you please check this and credit my Visa credit card back the $200.00 that I paid for the deposit? Thank you, Hugh Smith.

I booked my reservation in advance and paid in full including adding car insurance. The lady at the rental desk act like she couldn't find my reservation.
She then charged me a upgrade fee for a gas vehicle. She also charged me for car insurance all over again. The workers were very unfriendly and seem very confused. I had to wait longer than expected to get my vehicle.
I tried calling customer service but couldn't and email them but haven't received any feedback.I will never, ever rent again from them. They are horrible.

I'm very upset. Very.
Call me back, and let's try to talk. 312622****. You found some damage to the vehicle. But I checked everything when I returned the vehicle to you.
Everything was good. I have all the pictures of the damages that were there before I rented this vehicle, through your web service. I received links in a message from you, and after uploading the pictures, I got a message that they were successfully uploaded. And now you want to charge me for these damages?
I paid almost the same price for extra insurance as for the rent.
The vehicle that I rented was dirty, and I had to wash it. Guys, really?

I rented a car at the office on 263 West 52st in Manhattan on Wednesday October 2nd 2024.
I rented a Malibu because I just had knee surgery and needed legroom in the car. When I arrived there was not Malibu or other car that could accommodate my leg.
The attendant was kind of upgrade me for free.
However, I was charged $25 per day for the supposed complimentary car. The total amount billed was $100.
I would like to receive a refund for the overcharge.

Verified ReviewerDissatisfied with basic customer service expectations
The price quoted was competitive. Upon arrival in Hawaii, the car rental operation was clearly a disorganized mess.
We waited almost an hour to be offered a car with five seats (we reserved a seven-passenger for the six of us). An additional 40 minutes finally got us our car. When signing at the kiosk and exiting the parking garage (with a line of cars behind us), it was not clear that the weekly, daily, and tax rates had been changed from the original reservation. The car was acceptable and fulfilled the purpose it was rented for.
I addressed the charges when returning the car but was told there was nothing that the employee could do except print me a new itemized receipt. I followed up once home and went back and forth by email (I could not reach a human, and each email response from them takes 5-7 business days), explaining and itemizing all the differences. A month later, and after half a dozen communications, they couldn't even acknowledge their shortcomings and offer a reasonable refund for overcharges or late delivery.
I guarantee they are charging customers for late returns but do not compensate customers who wait for late deliveries. I will never rent from Dollar Rent-A-Car again, and I would gladly pay a little more for predictability and reasonable customer service.

It seems like the problem lies more with Priceline. Don't they back their services with any sort of guarantee?
Perhaps you have some sort of recourse through Priceline since they are the ones who offered you a service that ultimately didn't exist or made a deal with you that they did not have the authority to make.
I hope things turn out ok! Best wishes!
My second try working directly with Dollar was seamless and Henry and staff made it so. You might be on to something with priceline and I've never had a problem. Call Dollar or go to their site.
